Barcelona - Catalonia

page 1

In the fall of 2000, my first year working in Frankfurt at Deutsche Bank, a colleague who hails from near Barcelona invited me to come to Spain to visit him.  It took me about one second to decide: "sure man, let's go!".  It was the perfect excuse to brush up my horrible high school spanish, last used in 1989 (when I graduated from high school), and also see a place where the sun is always shining, people smile more than they frown, and they play elevator music in the subway stations!  It reminded me of Mexico, except it's older and more romantic. And the food wasn't bad, either - a little heavy on the fish, but I'm getting used to that, with Mad Cow Disease, Hoof-and-Mouth and God knows what other nasty epedemics rampaging across Europe.

This is some kind of  palace in the 'Gothic Quarter'... a very nice area to walk around in the night (it's all lit up and there are lots of old buildings)  I should know the name of this one, but I am missing my maps, so I will just say it's an important place and if you happen to be from Spain, and you know, maybe you can clear me up in my ignorance and tell me!
Here is Joe American Tourist standing in the middle of Calle Ferran (close to the palace in the picture above).  He is currently trying to figure out his location (he is used to American street grids).
This time looking up towards 'Tibidabo Mountain'.  There is a church, a ferris wheel and amusement park up there. There is a nice view of the city from there.
