Hamburg and Lübeck

Lübeck is one of the oldest cities along the north coast of Germany.  It sits at the crossing of two rivers - I forgot their names.  The main attractions are the old historical buildings and places, the church(es), and the canal.  It's quite pretty.  Also very small -  you can walk from one end to the other in about 10 minutes, if you're fast.  I like this.  This city also has a nice-looking tourist homepage.

The promenade along the canal in Lübeck.  The church towers in back were repaired following the war.  The bells you see below are in there.  The buildings along the waterfront are, like, really old.  A good place to visit for a day or weekend with your special someone.  I would leave the car parked somewhere else - bikes and mopeds only on the narrow streets.  Not a problem for us footbound people.
The enormous church bells in the main cathedral in Lübeck, fallen during one of the WW II bombing raids.  Compare their size to the boy standing in front of the cage.  Notice how deep they sunk into the brick floor.  Now a permanent sort of anti - war exhibit.

Most of Lübeck suffered heavily in bomb raids during the second world war.  I was told it was something of a 'bombing range' for the allies since it lies so close to Britain.  Apparently our boys and their British friends wanted to get rid of the extra bombs on their way back from Berlin, Frankfurt, or wherever.

Most Germans are pacifists now.  Those who survived the dark days don't like to talk about the war very much, or how it affected them.
