During our tour of the Port of Hamburg, we were regaled with interesting
historical tidbits and strange anecdotes. For instance the boat guide
told us the story about the pirate Klaus Störtebecker who was beheaded
(with 71 of his mates) and ran around for awhile without his head.
That's enough to make you want to go see 'the Blair Witch' again!
(I don't think so, bud). Or the joke about smugglers and disease.
It goes like this: 'sailors who don't smuggle, are sick. And
sailors don't ever get sick.'
| The port of Hamburg as seen from one of the cruise ships. These 'cruisers' are really nothing but old tugboats refitted as passenger ships, I think. The windows had two settings: open or closed. I preferred open, but the other passengers kept getting wet. Perhaps you can see some of them in the reflection from the glass? At least you can drink on board. Oh yes, the picture... in the background you see some of the German cranes used to load and unload the ships. | |
| This is one of the modern 'container ships' docked in Hamburg the day we visited. I think it was from China. Our guide did not have a high opinion of 'containers' - he said in the old days, dock workers were built with big shoulders, now they have big butts, because they just sit in front of computers and instruct the robots what to do. |
