Hamburg and Lübeck

page 1

This June I had the opportunity to travel to northern Germany and visit some relatives in Hamburg.  (Christel and Günter for those of you family types).  It was relaxing and fun.  I saw the city by day for the first time in about 20 years.  (I was once there as a youngun' and all I can remember was crying on the ship cause it was cold.)  Sorry I can't regale you with stories of the night life, but Hamburg-by-night is on my next trip list.  The major attractions in Hamburg are the port ('Hafen') and its many warehouses and loading docks, and the reknowned red light district 'St. Pauli' (along the waterfront) and 'Reperbahn' (the especially interesting area which I didn't see).  You can also go to theofficial homepage for the city of Hamburg (German) or the more colorful Hamburg highlights (German/English).  There's a really good city history guide linked to this site (unfortunately only in German).

Here is the area immediately next to the Port, not far from the 'St. Pauli district'.  Not much to look at during the day ... but at night the whole area lights up.  Did you know the 'St. Pauli Girl' on German Beer bottles comes from this area?  Unfortunately I did not get to meet her on this trip.

There is quite a lot to see along this avenue.  On the left is the port (the river Elbe which widens into a harbor).  One of those buildings with a round domed roof is where one of the largest river tunnels was dug in the last century.  The cars used to have to queue up there to go into the tunnel on some sort of rail car ('queue' is not part of my regular vocabulary, but everyone here speaks Oxford and it's affecting me, too).

A picture of a warehouse in the port ('speicher').  Our tour on the boat in the port of Hamburg was very interesting.  Did you know this city has the largest warehouses for cocao and coffee in Europe?
